I once saw an Antarctic Biologist asked if he thought digging up some million year old bacteria or virus could get loose and start the Zombie Apocalypse. His answer was he was inclined to believe it more likely today's modern environment would be so alien to the million year old biological as to be completely hostile to it.

Of course, he was just guessing!

No matter Inter-planetary or inter-dimensional or frigging Atlantis, It's all rock-n-roll Extra...Terrestrial to me. I tend to think the ETs have been "visiting" here so long that we have more shared Biologicals than the Inca's had tolerance to Small Pox.

Just like I think we were plenty clever enough to come up with transistors, fiber optics, and night vision during the time line this technology seems to be credited with...I think we are plenty clever enough to come up with a Bio-warfare Bug that could escape a lab.

Notice I do not equate the word clever with smart. Bipedal hominids are plenty clever. It's been demonstrated that just three clever bipedal hominids can easily move actual Stonehenge size monolithic stones with simple levers and a fulcrum...got it on video.

Lastly, I think Mother Balance of Nature knows when to make her own Biologicals get to work and make a public appearance when any population of animals get out of control.

A natural highly communicable plague, striking too quickly for an effective vaccine, traveling airlines business class redeyes worldwide practically overnight leaves only a third of the population with natural immunity to pick-up the high tech toys left behind by the mob and rebuild a New Renaissance of Geopolitics would be my guess. Sounds like the one CDC really fears.

Of course, I'm only guessing too.
